Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands
We are delighted to be part of the the green heartlands of Ireland’s natural beauty, where activity and relaxation are centred around rural communities. The Hidden Heartlands lifestyle is very much apart of the appeal of the boat tour and boats for hire allowing visitors to explore the beautiful Lough Key part of the iconic River Shannon and the Beara Breifne Way.
There’s an infinite variety of things to do for all ages in Lough Key.
As well as the Boat Tours, guided tours and boats for hire, there is also an activity centre, shop, cafe, Segway hire and zip wire.
Included in the Lough Key Park’s amenities are an observation tower, Icehouse, Wishing chair, Fairy Bridge and underground tunnels accessible through the activity centre the Lough Key Experience.
The immense range of habitats encourages a huge diversity of wildlife. Summer visitors including cuckoo, tern, willow warbler, whitethroat and blackcap increase the resident bird population.
Also located near by are two 9-hole golf courses one in Carrick on Shannon and one just outside Boyle .
Magnificent restored ruins of the Cistercian abbey founded by Maurice O’Duffy in 1161.
The Abbey is a transitional creation, bridging the Romanesque and Gothic periods.
This can be seen in the juxta-position of a row of rounded arches on one side of the nave and one of pointed arches on the other.
King House was the 18th century seat of the Kings, later Earls of Kingston, and was built for Sir Henry King, MP on the site of an earlier house, which was destroyed by fire. The family moved to Rockingham (now Lough Key Forest Park). The house now contains a series of exhibitions.
